One 39-year-old labourer, Mohammed Ibrahim, was on Tuesday sentenced to death via hanging by an Ogun State High Court situated in Abeokuta over the killing of a two-year-old baby, and crime he perpetrated in 2014.
Ibrahim was also found guilty by Justice Ayokunle Rotimi-Balogun, for making an endeavor to murder one Mrs. Rabi Yakubu, and consequently condemned him to life incarceration.
Likewise, the judge had held that the trial proved the accusation of murder beyond all reasonable doubts.
The convict who was tried and adjudge on two-count charge of murder and attempted murder, was found guilty of the two charges, which, it was said, contravened Sections 320, 316(1) and 319(1) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.
It was contended by the prosecuting attorney, Mrs. Oluwabunmi Akinola, before the court that Ibrahim committed the offence on April 12, 2014 at Ofada town, Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of Ogun.
Disclosing, Akinola said the defendant had tailed Mrs. Yakubu, who had her two-year-old son strapped to her back, as she entered a bush to ease herself.
On getting into the bush, the woman allegedly put her baby on the ground to relieve herself, when Ibrahim ambushed her with a knife, trying to decapitate her.The woman, who struggled with Ibrahim, fled to call for aid without carrying her child.
“When Ibrahim realised he did not succeed in cutting off her head which he needed for sale, he then cut off the complainant’s son’s head,” the prosecutor told.
Nevertheless, the accussed admitted that his intent was to cut off the woman’s head, according to Akinola.
Revealing further, Akiola said Ibrahim had arranged with a woman at Ibadan in Ibode market, who consented to pay him N120,000 for a human head.
However, the said prospective buyer was explained to have declined to pay the sum as vouched. So, he obtained the head back and went to inhume it.
